Respected Sir/Madam,
With due respect, I would like to bring to your attention regarding the damages incurred to a historical monument in my city, Kolkata. I, (xyz), am a student who resides in Bhowanipore, near Elgin Road. The concerned monument is Victoria Memorial Hall located near Maidan, on Queen's Way, in the heart of central Kolkata, PIN 700071.
Last month, I visited Victoria Memorial Hall with my friends on a school trip arranged by the school authorities. It is disheartening to see the deteriorating condition of the hall. Victoria Memorial is an enticing spot of Kolkata both for locals as well as tourists. Built in the memory of Queen Victoria after her death, symbolizing British colonial legacy in India, the monument is commended for being a masterpiece of Indo-Saracenic Revival architecture, blending British, Mughal, Venetian, and Egyptian styles.
Victoria Memorial is also a museum with 25 galleries displaying historical paintings, manuscripts, weapons, rare books, sculptures, and British memorabilia. It contains paintings by artists like Thomas Daniell, William Daniell, and Abanindranath Tagore.
During the school trip, several students noticed the damages occurred to the monument like cracks and fissures, improper AC installation, rusting of internal fixtures, damage due to visitor footfall, and environmental damages. A 1.5-inch wide crack was discovered in one of the storeroom galleries of the memorial. Experts traced the crack’s origin back to over 20 years, indicating long-term neglect. In 2015, the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) installed air-conditioners by drilling 18 holes into priceless Italian marble walls and inserting 9 iron joists into the structure to hold up false ceilings. The moisture from the ACs led to rusting of metal parts, which began displacing marble panels and stucco work. Due to the AC installation and poor drainage, moisture accumulated inside parts of the building. Heavy daily footfall (up to 20,000 visitors) contributes to wear and tear of the flooring, especially original marble sections. Air pollution, especially sulphur dioxide and soot from traffic around the Maidan area, has led to blackening of white marble surfaces and erosion of finer carvings and ornamental details over time.
Certain measures could be taken up to preserve the monument in an effective manner. The cracks could be mended by using non-invasive, ASI-approved materials. Strict conservation norms need to be observed, such as prohibition of new drilling, wiring, or structural alteration. The installation of non-invasive dehumidifiers and natural ventilation systems to prevent rust and mould should be taken up. In order to avoid environmental damages to the monument, a traffic-free buffer zone can be created in the area close to the monument. Other measures like planting pollution-absorbing trees and installing air purifiers at key points can also be taken into consideration.
Therefore, I would kindly like you to pay attention to the monument in deterioration. If the proper measures are observed, the monument can be restored to a healthy look once again.
Thanking You,
