Subject: Rising Prices and the Inconvenience to the Common Man
Dear Sir,
With due respect, I would like to bring your attention to the rising prices and the aggravation of problems caused to the common man. The ordinary mass is in adversity due to the ill effects of such a hike in price.
From the past 1–2 years, the country is witnessing an instant hike in prices, thereby bringing instability to the socioeconomic fabric of society. The prices of basic and daily amenities are rising at an alarming rate — food, fuel, vegetables, medicines, and other essentials. India is especially known for the availability of vegetables and food items at reasonable rates. Vegetables like potatoes, onions, and other seasonal items could earlier be bought between ₹20 to ₹150 per kg. But now, purchasing one kg of potatoes ranges from ₹50 to ₹60, which is quite excessive. In the case of fuel, petrol and diesel are priced between ₹103–106 and ₹87–90 per litre, respectively. The same applies to medicines and other essentials.
The poor sections of society are constantly tormented by the lack of basic needs. The major concern today is how to tackle such problems for the needy strata. Not only the poor but the middle class is also facing discomfort. In a time where access to good quality education from reputed institutions is a common aspiration, the upsurge in the prices of essentials is detrimental. The middle class is hit hard when such economic turmoil occurs.
The government must act urgently. It should:
- Set up price-monitoring committees at local and national levels to track daily price fluctuations of essential items.
- Expand the availability of subsidized grains and pulses through ration shops.
- Offer Direct Benefit Transfers (DBTs) to low-income households to offset the price rise.
- Invest in cold storage, warehousing, and transport infrastructure to reduce spoilage and maintain supply.
- Use real-time data analytics and weather forecasting to predict shortages and plan timely imports.
- Enforce anti-hoarding laws and monitor black marketing effectively.
- Consider temporary reductions in fuel taxes during high inflation periods.
Therefore, it is high time that these issues are given due consideration to reassure balance in the economy and reduce hardship for the average citizen.
